I don't know why it persists.

I do know that you can look at the contents of the backup set and you can
restore an individual file from it.  Look at the syntax on the restore
backupset command.  Also, check the list archives as I asked a question
similar to this and I think one of the developers answered my question.
It's been awhile since then though.
