Yes :-)

The estimated capacity is set per devclass and is just an indication of
what you expect for tapes/volumes used in that devclass. This then gets
used to 'estimate' the % utilized per volume and to reflect the total size
of a storage pool (based on the number of scratch tapes that can be used
(maxscratch) and the estimated capacity).

Reality gets reflected once you go past the estimated capacity or if the
tape gets 'full' before the estimated capacity. For example the estimated
capacity for my 4mm DDS2 test environment is 8 gig, but I typically only
get 6-7 gig on them. When they are full % util goes to 100 and the
estimated capacity gets changed from 8gig to whatever is really on the
tape.

Contrast that to the old 3590B environment I used to work on where the
10Gig native carts would often get 40-60gig of SAP data on them. In this
environment we updated the 'estimated' capacity to 30Gig.

It doesn't really mean much, but if you like to use the estimates then it
is a problem in a library where you have mixed both 3590J & K
tapes. The drives are happy to read and write either tape, so you can
share them in the library, and you will then have a single devclass which
is used for both tapes. What do you set the 'estimated capacity'
at - 20gig, 40gig, higher (if you account for some compression)? That's
up to you :-)

Looking at this, what confused me, and I hope someone can accurately
answer is the following:

SAP003 PROD_TAPE_- 3590DEV2 35,803.7 98.6
Filling

The estimated capacity for the devclass is 30 gig, the tape is still
filling, but showing a % utilized of 98.6. I thought that it should show
100% utilized as soon as it reached the estimated capacity, but still be
'filling' until it reached the end of the tape.

Could it be that some data has already expired from this tape since it was
last written to? Do I misunderstand the 100% reflection?

Thanks,
Cameron.
