True , but depends on which tape gone  bad ,tape from  tapepool or copypool ?
   if tape in copypool goes bad every morning  " backup stgpool tapepool
copypool" command
  backups the primary pool (tapepool) to copypool ( in  my case  i am having
extra copypool  -> copypool1  )
  and in case of request to restore you are always having an onsite copy in
tapepool ..
   i am using DRM , which does this function for me. may be i am missing
something.. reading Admin Guide for the same .

   You have to let ADSM know a tape is bad or destroyed, and eventually
delete the knowledge of existence of that tape completely in ADSM..... it
is not enough to remove a tape from a library, and then audit the library.
When a library gets to full capacity, some of the local onsite data tapes
can be withdrawn and left sitting on a shelf.  When a request to restore a
file is made, if that file was written to a removed tape (whether it be a
bad tape that was removed, or a tape that was shelved to allow other tapes
in the library), ADSM will request that tape be re-inserted in the
library.... unless you moved its active data, or regenerated the removed
tape from offsite copypool versions, ADSM still relies on that "bad removed
tape" to satisfy restore request.

once  you checkout  bad tape , and will be not using , there is no question
to
tell ADSM that tape is bad ,
since it will be  not in the library, just run audit library  command after
ejecting tape.

How do I tell ADSM that a tape is bad and should never be used again?

I assume that I check it out, but what status do I give it so that
ADSM never tries to use it again? Or is there another command entirely
to destroy a volume?

Server is 3.1.2.20 on AIX 4.x
