We do in fact define a device c;lass of file and back up the DB and critical 
config files to a directory, which is then written to an 8MM tape outside the 
3494 library and taken offsite daily.

I've wondered what would happen if we lost the database and TSM and we could 
use the tape library.

Well, you could define a Devclass of DEVType=FILE for this purpose,
and then install like a 36GB hard drive inside a safe, or safe-like
device, and automatically have a, um, safe copy, with no extra
effort on your part.  Differential SCSI cables have quite a reach.
