Frequently asked questions like that are addressed in my ADSM functional
directory, at  http://people.bu.edu/rbs.  To wit:

The tape you had a problem with may be fine: it may be the drive which has a
problem.  I'd exercise the drive using the 'tapeutil' command, and in any case
fill a tape to EOV to see what happens.
