With the new 3.7.3.0 AIX server, SAN Tape Sharing is now supported.

Of course it requires a Storage Area Network to be built to make
it work (you will need fibre channel hubs, the IBM SAN Data Gateway,
AIX FC cards, and the physical fibre cables run.

From what I have heard of your environment, a SAN sounds like a
perfect fit for your shop.
