Also, since you did a Q VOL and it didn't show up, there's one other
condition that wasn't mentioned.
If the tape is a DB backup (non-stgpool tape of any kind too?) and its
been removed from the robot-library (did you say you had one?) then it
will not show data or dbackup but be blank until its mounted once.
