Eric:
I just completed an upgrade very similar to yours ( 3.1.2.20 to 3.7.2)and
the answer is " You will need to run the dsmserv upgradedb before starting
your 3.7.2 server"

The readme at the end of the 3.7.X upgrade reads like it is an automatic db
upgrade, but it is wrong.
