Neil,

You don't want to backup your diskpool volumes with the savevg also you don't
want to backup the ADSM database volumes as you will restore this from your main
library.

So what is normal is to create a exclude.adsmvg file in the /etc directory that
lists the stuff you don't want in the savevg. Then run the savevg with the -e
option (it's all in the savevg man page). This should cut your savevg down to a
size that will fit on your 4mm DAT.

I work for an IBM business partner so if you need help give me a shout, also if
you want to do a DR test let me know and we could help you with that (I've done
others).

Sorry about the sales pitch - feel free to email any further questions on the
NSM stuff.

regards,

Stuart

Subject Bare metal restore of a 3466 NSM
  :

Does anybody out there have a 3466 NSM. If so can you please help. I am in
the process of implementing ADSM using a NSM and need to understand the
implications of a bare metal restore on this system. The 3466 Start-up guide
mentions the usual following solution :-

1. Run 'endadsm' to stop ADSM
2. Run 'prebackup' script. This unmounts all ADSM filesystems and exports
the ADSMVG
3. Run AIX 'mksysb' command to backup the ROOTVG.

and that's it.

What I'm not happy about is the fact that this is not securing the ADSMVG
which would also be needed if I ever had to perform a bare metal restore.
The problem is that the ADSMVG is 132GB and all I have is a single 4mm DAT
drive with 2GB tape capacity, therefore I'm not even sure if this is
feasible. I have even read back the contents of the 'mksysb' tape and all I
can see (as expected) was the rootvg files.

If I was to perform this process then this would have to be performed using
AIX 'savevg adsmvg' command.

Can any body confirm whether I am worrying in vane or do I need to perform
this process to ensure that I can rebuild my system from scratch. Many
thanks for your time in advance.
