I am trying to get my head around what session statistics are actually telling
me, in
particular what actually makes up

1) network data transfer rate
2) aggregate data transfer rate

Adsm manuals say :-

network data transfer rate. The data transfer rate calculated by dividing
the total number of bytes transferred by the data transfer time. For
example, the time spent transferring data over the network.

aggregate data transfer rate. The data transfer rate is calculated by
dividing the total number of bytes transferred by the elapsed processing
time.

This seems a pretty straightforward definition, but I am sure there must be more
to it than that because what I
am seeing is that an improvement in network transfer rate does not always mean
an improvement in aggregate
transfer rate.
Here is an example from a server using a particularly slow bit of network.
I changed the server tcpip address in the dsm.opt so that the backup would use a
 faster network route and the
data transfer rate improved, but the aggregate transfer rate was actually worse.
All ideas welcome
