The volume has to transition ot scratch when all of the data on it is no
longer valid. This can happen in a number of ways:
1) Reclamation of a tape in a tape storage pool
2) Volume history deletion of a tape that belongs to a database backup
If you want to force the volume to go to scratch, you can delete the volume
from the tape storage pool, but be aware, that by doing this, you will be
discarding any valid data that still resides on the volume. The command
would be
adsm> delete vol <volnumber> discarddata=yes
The process may take a few minutes to complete.
If it's an old database backup you want to delete, do this
adsm> delete volhist todate=<date of volume> type=dbb
To see the date of the volume use
adsm> q volhist
Remember, you won't be allowed to delete the last and only database backup
no matter how old it is.
