Eric - I would not say that there was a lack of feedback, per se.  ADSM saw
       that the library was in a state indicating that it was temporarily
unavailable, and ADSM reasonably waited for it.  That's what you would want.
Hardware philosophy still expects that there are machine room operators that
are there to pay attention to equipment and deal with such conditions, though
in some cases it is necessary to awaken the operator first.

    As already posted, you can use SNMP or the mtlib command to effect
monitoring and alerting.  In my shop, I already had a C-based AIX cluster
monitoring program, and to that added 3494 monitoring via the interface
defined in the SCSI Tape Device Drivers manual (see ftp.storsys.ibm.com
/devdrvr directory).  It's not difficult, and uses values defined in the
/usr/include/sys/mtlibio.h file which is installed as part of atldd.  (I'll
send sample code to anyone interested: email me DIRECTLY - not ADSM-L.)
