The technique should really be called LAN free restore.  The backups still
use the LAN, but you can create backupsets on the server and take them to
the clients for restore.  It works well, but generating the backupset can be
a slow process.  I only have small file systems so I my testing is somewhat
limited, but I can imagine how long it would take to generate a set for a
very large FS.
