Yes, TDP for WG sometime this year will allow the data to be sent to TSM server
storage and managed within the policies
  as one entry.

Gerald,
Tivoli Data Protection for Workgroups is VERY similar to Stac Replica Tape.
So far it is possible to create disaster recovery media on a tape device
locally attached to the NT-server to protect.
As usual with Replica Tape you can recover your machine from this media
without having to install some basic parts of NT first. Replica uses the NT
boot disk and creates another one with some Replica programs and of course
the tape device driver.

This all works quite fine, but there are two points that really hurt:
1. You never can get a restore with a better result than having your
bootdrive in the same state as before the disaster. So changing hardware can
get you into real trouble (or you have to be a real wizard and create
identical machines for recovery)
2. TDPfW only works with locally attached tape drives. Think of having only
50 NT-servers and you'll need a tape operator to collect all those tapes and
carry them offsite. It's really great you can schedule the backups from
within TSM, but I'd prefer it the other way (scheduling locally, destination
for backups is TSM).

In a redbook about TDPfW (SG24-5490-00) I've found some hints on an upcoming
Tivoli Data Protection for Servers, that is to make it possible to use the
TSM server as a destination for the Replica backups:

"This facility to connect to the TSM server will be expanded in the next
release, called Tivoli Data Protection for Servers (TDRfS), so that you can
use the TSM server and the intelligent distributed Storage Management
facilities as the destination for replications."

So let's hope TDPfS will bring up real bare metal recovery for TSM...

Best regards,
Michael
