Lisa,
does this mean that a 3.1 admin client can do 3.7 server admin? Is the b/a
client 3.7, with the admin client in a seperate directory?

I wonder what kind of functionality is lost by using the 3.1 admin client (then
again, you could always just use the command line for those tasks).

thanks,
Lisa Cabanas

We were successful in using the 3.1 NT ADMIN GUI from our workstations when
it's necessary to view items on our AIX 3.7 server.

You may not have an Admin API, but you do have the well documented command
line utilites. An enterprising company could write a gui front end to the
command line (Java? TCL/Tk?) since Tivoli is letting the command line go.
I think that we are seeing the demand for such a product. It might take
some research to determine exactly what funtionality would be necessary.
I don't know how effective/responsive the application would be, but it
couldn't possibly be any worse than the web interface (IMHO). Such a
product could be like AIX's SMIT with the ability to show you what command
it is running in the background (so I can figure out all of those commands
that I sometimes forget). ;-)

Walter,

I agree that they will remain steadfast - not because they don't care about
us but because of the significant engineering expense. Perhaps, if you
could see all the projects that the *SM team is working on and rate them
one
by one, you would agree. Perhaps not. They certainly can't share the list
and they're doing the best job they can at prioritizing wants vs. new
features. Keeping the GUI was expensive.

SSSI doesn't have an Admin GUI, but a daily operations GUI. STORServer
Manager automates all the daily operations and makes it easy for operators
to run *SM without ever needing to do a Q ACTLOG - all the daily operations
errors show up in red if it requires human attention. It allows someone
who
doesn't know the first thing about *SM to check tapes in and out, and
provides a continuous graphical inventory of tapes.

We could extend it to more administrative functions and we're considering
that. But the lack of the Admin API makes it risky. And it may not have
the same look and feel of the old native GUI that we all know and loved.
How would you feel about that? My assumption is that it isn't just the
speed, but that we got used to the interface and we liked it just the way
it
was.

     I.M.H.O

even though complaints are plentifull on the dropping of the Admin GUI
I believe Tivoli will remain headstrong and continue to reply 'You've
got the WEB interface, what are you complaining about'.

Well I still prefer the GUI and I love it. If they're not going to
give us the GUI then give us the @#&?!! admin api and let third party
providers build a GUI on any platform they like (I believe SSSI has
trodded this area ?). I'd rather pay for that than being forced to use
something I just plain do not like to use, and it was and still is a
     usability issue.

     regards Walter Ridderhof

P.S. the reply about using JAVA holds truth, cross platform GUI should
     indeed not be an issue.
