Interesting..... We are working through the missing DRM tape problem but we
see at differently. We just went to TSM 3.7.1 running on AIX 4.2.1 this
weekend and we "lost" 3 tapes this weekend. So the problem may be our
internal process. We were running ADSM 3.1.2.22. We rotate tapes once a week
to the offsite location.

We are running with a 3494. If we check out more than 10 tapes at a time
everything just waits until the tapes have been removed from the 3494 I/O
station and continues from there so we don't see the issue mentioned.

We seem to be losing the tapes when we change from Vaultretrieve to
Onsiteretrieve status. We are using enddate and endtime on the move drmedia
command but from we can tell tapes that went to Vaultretrieve status after
the enddate and endtime specified in the move drmedia command are changing
status and being deleted from the offsite tape pool.

Have a stack of printouts on my desk from the time all this happened
yesterday to see if I can better understand what is happening.

                Wu,

My company is having the same problems with tapes
disappearing from
the DRM. The tape will be listed as offsite but the
physical volume will
still be in the silo. This is due to the fact that if more
than 14 tapes
need to be checked out of the silo, the rest disappear from
ADSM and never
make it out of the cap door and then return to the home
element slot. The
software sees the tape as offsite and they lose internal
visibility within
the silo and ADSM loses sight of they're physical location.
IBM said they
are going to be giving us a fix. I hope everyone will ask
IBM to get on
this issue and get it resolved soon. Currently, our solution
is the same in
that we are doing a series of checkins to get the volume
inventory properly
synced to the database. Please consult your IBM rep to ask
the ADSM
development group to provide the needed software fix.
Anyone considering
the DRM piece should ask IBM about this problem first before
you buy it,
because I know a number of you are considering it. Thanks

The way to correct it is to run two checkin commands:

                checkin libvol libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=scratch
                checkin libvol libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=private

The order is critical here, unless you want all your scratch
tapes checked
                in as private tapes.

An audit library will verify that all the tapes *SM thinks
are in the
library are actually in the library. It does not fix up
tapes it doesn't
know about though. Audit does not take the place of
correctly executed
                checkin commands.

                Hi Jialin,
How often do you run 'audit library'?
