Without a DIRMC, directories are bound to the management class with the
longest retention period. While most directories are stored in the
database, directories with over ??? bytes of information (path name, name,
access control list etc) are written to the storage pool. Over time these
"long" directories can be spread over several tapes.

Later, when restoring a filesystem which resides in storage pool X,
additional mounts from pool y (where Y is associated with the longest
retention period) may be required in order to restore some of the
directories. A DIRMC will avoid these extra tape mounts by consolidating
all directories into one storage pool.

I defined a MC on the server (named DIR) with it own small disk storage
pool. Its next stgpool (DIRTAPE) is a tape pool used just for directories.
On the client in the dsm.sys file add the line: DIRMC DIR (or whatever name
you choose for your MC).

If you don't have a copy of the "Getting Started with ADSM" redbook, I
highly recommend it.
