Technically, the tapes can be read by another application.  Would the data
make sense?  Perhaps, perhaps not. As mentioned, there is no cataloging of
the data on the tape itself.  Ones and zeros is all you get.  However, in
the case of textual information, one could conceivably get the information
off of the tape, i.e., it is not encrypted as it is written to tape.

Careful how you answer the question: is it easy?  Probably not.  Is it
possible?  Probably.
