I have seen network speeds in access of 30 MB/second.
I blame it on the 'client compression' setting that you can use.

Here are the statistics for a backup of some (mostly Empty) Oracle
databases
on a 100 Mb/s network.

Total number of objects inspected: 242
Total number of objects backed up: 235
Total number of objects updated: 0
Total number of objects rebound: 0
Total number of objects deleted: 0
Total number of objects failed: 0
Total number of bytes transferred: 459.63 MB (w/o compression, around
20 GB I think)
Data transfer time: 11.28 sec
Network data transfer rate: 41,722.30 KB/sec
Aggregate data transfer rate: 160.59 KB/sec
Objects compressed by:
98%
Elapsed processing time: 00:48:50

11.28 seconds, and 459 MB ~= 41 MB/second... I think somthing is wrong
with that data transfer time. And it must be related to using the client
compression. (I wonder if it was on in the original senders question?)
