We have a series of tapes that are of questionable quality. We have decided
to migrate the data from these (selected) tapes via a Move Data to avoid
possible lost data situations if possible - sort of preventive maintenance.
As I was running a few today I noticed some strange behavior from the
Server.

I started the move data for one of our suspect volumes. The tape happened to
be a copypool tape, and as such of course was marked as being offsite. The
move data process, therefore began to mount in house tapes to handle the move
request. What surprised me was that as the amount of usable data on the tape
in question fell below the reclaim threshold, a Reclamation was kicked off.
The whole idea struck me as being a little silly - I was trying to move the
data off of a given volume, and at the same time, ADSM was trying to reclaim
the data. We do not co-locate the data in our copypool, so there are
multiple users on any tape. The reclaim did not trip over the volumes
mounted for the move - it found others, and began to do its thing without
apparent contention.

This situation seems to be an exercise in redundancy to me. I would have
hoped that the space reclamation would not have kicked off, since the tape
being reclaimed was the target of a Move Data, and would have been deleted in
another minute anyway. I know ADSM can't be clairvoyant, but it would seem
to me that a reclaim should check to see if there are any outstanding
processes going on for the volume in question.
