pwd means print working directory.
On my True64 machine with ksh it prints out the actual directory

kronos> echo `pwd`
/home/jodda
kronos>

Attention: the ` is the backward version.

Hello, not quite sure, but I think 'pwd' is a kind of variable and you
should replace it with the name of a directory. Without any garantee...
