As Andy mentioned, the generate backupset does essentially what you're
asking for.  In addition, you can move the set from the server to the client
and do the restore without the network.

The downside of this approach is that the set is really "outside" of the
normal TSM/ADSM loop.  That is, the set is a copy of the active data.  It is
consolidated, however, so restoring from it is much faster.  One could make
a set periodically.  In the event of a restore, use the latest set and then
a normal pit restore to get you to the most recent filesystem view.

I had the opportunity to listen to a developer while at the Oxford
symposium.  Doing this provided a different perspective on the amount of
difficulty required to implement new features like this.  Plus, they have
about a million ideas of thigs to do.  I agree this should be a fairly high
priority.  Some sort of filespace consolidation of active files is needed.
Try backupsets to get you by for now.
