Yes you're right. We upgraded the drive microcode simultaneous with the
driver upgrade.
Oh well... back to the drawing board.

        Nathan - It *might* be the case that the drive microcode would also
need
                 to be upgraded.  Unfortunately, there is essentially no IBM
        guidance in coordinating these various associated elements, so the
        customer is often left to try it and find out.
