Chris,
Very good suggestions.
I take it from your comment that setting up a separate system is the way to
go. That is what I had suspected.
I just read up on the mailstorm.exe utility in the resource kit. That
should help also.
Thanks again,
Damian Ryan

When building your test environment, always start from scratch.
Document how
you build the system ACCURATELY and EXACTLY - you will need this
later.
Create a few user accounts, and then use MailStorm.EXE (the actual
name may
be slightly different) to send some mail messages. This can be used
to
quickly populate a database and bring it up to a reasonable size
(say 1
GByte or so). (Remember as 1 message to 1000 people generates the
same
amount of database space as 1 message to 1 person you actually need
to send
1000 messages).
Then do some ADSM tests - backups via GUI, backups via command line,
backups
via schedules, restores both with and without log files.
Then kill the server (format c:) and re-build it, and restore the
data.
Then get a second server (i.e. different hardware) and build
Exchange onto
it and restore the data.
Then use MailStorm again to increase the database size to 10 GBytes
or so,
and re-check the performance.
Cheers, Chris

Subject: Test Environment for ADSM Exchange Agent
Hello,
First off, I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this
type of
question.
I was hoping to get some input on how to configure a lab for testing
the
ADSM Exchange connect agent.
I was considering setting up a server using the "Spare Server
On-line"
concepts mentioned in TechNet as well as ADSM documentation. You
configure
the Exchange system with the same organization and site name and
choose
Create New Site having a unique computer name during installation.
I would
then have a replicated database of actual mail boxes after restoring
the
PRIV.EDB and running the DS/IS consistency adjuster.
Having never done this before I am a little concerned over the
potential for
any minor or serious repercussions to production environments.
The alternative would be to set up a separate system altogether,
manually
creating a couple of test mail boxes and users and just do some
small scale
testing.
If anyone has any suggestions on documentation or real world
experience
input I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Damian Ryan
