We have Informix in the company, the informix DBA do a DB export, then ADSM
backs up this export.

We use a script. In this script we shutdown the DB, do the export and we
include at the end of the script the ADSM command line. 

The script is executed by unix cron.

Depend on the informix version you can use the OnVar Utility, and then, you
will be able to do backups on line.
