The message that looked scrambled is probably in some form of EBCDIC codepage.
Viewing the scrambled string on an English VM system shows:

ANR2910E Iºvº ºº SQL tºººº - 'FROM'.~

I believe there might be some problem with the EBCDIC <--> ASCII conversion in
the ODBC driver.
