        That depends on the type of hardware change that you make.

        If you open up the registry with regedt32 under Windows NT you will
find that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE does not have an associated hive.
        That's because the key is rebuilt each time you boot so that NT can
adapt itself to changes in the hardware.

        NTDetect.com which runs at boot time, gathers the information which
makes up HARDWARE.

        If however you make a drastic change such as going from the Intel
Platform to the Alpha platform then you need to replace the HAL which is a
different story altogether.
        The recovery process then becomes significantly different.

                I believe it will work just fine on a Windows 95 system if
all you are
                upgrading is the processor.
                (It definitely will NOT work for Windows NT, because Windows
NT keeps
                hardware information in the registry.)

                But make sure you think through what you are doing.
Consider whether the
                machines are REALLY the same except the processor.  If the
new Pentium III
                has, for instance, a different network card, you could be
missing the
                appropriate drivers.
