I am also using the "lo-tech" for for the moment.

Do you find that your Oracle controlfiles are always
in a changed status therefore the backup for them is
always unsuccessful. Did you end up using your backup
controlfile, i.e. alter database backup controlfile to "file".

Note: I am using the example out of the redbook as well.
