Cindy,

There is an internal document within IBM that documents recent performance
tests executed by an independent consulting firm for a Fortune 200 customer.
The test was to backup and restore a large Oracle 8 database on a Sun 10K
platform. Amazingly enough, a correctly tuned ADSM solution was slightly
FASTER in backing up the database. On the corresponding restore, ADSM was
faster by magnitudes of time, i.e. ADSM could have restored the database
several times within the timeframe that it took the Veritas solution to
restore it once. I suggest that you work with your local IBM support to get
a copy of this document. It is very enlightening.

In general, if you are concerned with performance, you should be concerned
with RESTORE performance over BACKUP performance. It is very easy to get
caught up in the speeds and feeds hype because everyone would like a shorter
backup window, but the restore is the reason that we take the backup in the
first place. Another point that I would like to bring out is that all
backup products are not the same. I have several large customers with a
variety of backup solutions that they "assumed" were as diligent about
protecting your data as is ADSM, only to find out when they needed to
restore, they were unable.

It is very easy to get caught up in the grass-is-always-greener scenario,
especially when upper management and sales people are involved. If you
currently have and ADSM solution implemented, I would suggest that you stay
there for the time being. With the long-awaited advent of storage area
networks, the way that data is backed up and managed is in the process of
being revolutionized. ADSM has announced several enhancements dealing with
LAN-less backups and many other enhancements that will raise the performance
bar to a new level. I would suggest that you wait and get a clear
understanding of every vendors roadmap before consider introducing or
converting to a new solution. I hope this was helpful.
