Be careful of any product claims for example...
We tested Legato for Informix backup and found that it did very well with
the backup. The problem is with the restore. It was not that spectacular.
I know for a fact if I had my choice I would take a slower backup over a
slower restore when management is breathing down my neck.
Also, we use ADSM backup for Exchange database and it does a super job for
us backing up and restoring, knock on wood, once you get past the awkward
and very manual configuration setup.
Good luck and don't shy away from asking for referrals on this stuff.

It's always interesting to me when a vendor's sales strategy is to
try to
tear apart the other guy instead of building up his own product. If
his
product is so good, it should win on it's own merits. I find it's a
dangerous tactic to spread FUD about a competing product, because
sometimes,
the person you make the deragatory statements to knows more about
the
product than you do and you end up looking foolish.
Just my opinion.

To all:
We're currently in the middle of evaluating Veritas as a method of
backup
versus ADSM --- and Veritas is throwing around a tremendous number
of poor
claims about ADSM's performance on a variety of platforms, and most
especially with database backups. Most of their information, I
suspect, is
"clean-room" material, because although there are some sites using
Veritas
out there, it doesn't seem to be the strategic product of choice for
medium
or large organizations. And that may mean there are probably not
many sites
giving away their "real-world" performance stats, etc.
I'd appreciate any information anyone can provide concerning Veritas
---
good or bad experiences, installation/implementation stories, etc.,
good or bad experiences, installation/implementation stories, etc.,
that
anybody would like to share. If you've done your own comparisons
with
Veritas and ADSM, I'd really like to hear from you --- the
"real-world"
stuff is where a product lives or dies.
Thanks much!
