     This is correct ! Just because you don't want the files backed up
     doesn't mean you don't want the directory structure brought back in
     case of a mass failure.

     Lets use for example an oracle data base... its files are open &
     active most of the time (when the db is up) thus the files are
     excluded from incremental backup processing BUT if your system dies &
     you have to restore it somewhere else, you should have archived copies
     of the .dbf files from hot backups... but you need somewhere to put
     them! Incremental backup processing of these file systems (which
     saves the directory structure even though the file systems are
     excluded from incremental processing) ensures you have a place to put
     them.

     Now they've been dork'n around with the code, where an archive
     triggers an archive into the longest retention management class of the
     directory structure in which the archived file resides but we've seen
     where that has gone...

     so anyway, in some cases it might seem like a big waste but in most it
     is a BIG C.Y.A. !

     JMHO

     Dwight

yes but if I have an exclude of *:\DIRA\DIRB\...\*.* it still backs up the
directories in DIRA\DIRB...

example

07/14/1999 02:48:06 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\49UZGDYN [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:06 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\63MDS70D [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:06 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\6OVK8UCO [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\HXFQUIBF [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\IS1TMZ6K [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\K3CR29SP [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\KX6ZKPI7 [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\SDIVKXUN [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\WDUFWXYV [Sent]
07/14/1999 02:48:07 Directory-->                   0 C:\WINNT\Temporary
Internet Files\WW395N3J [Sent]

Here is the exclude entry...

Exclude         "*:\...\Temporary Internet Files\...\*.*"

Thanks,
Mark
