Re: HACMP and ADSM

Actually... well I'd put some thought into it but here is what has
developed over the years at Amoco (now BP-Amoco)
OK, we pump our data first into big diskpools, then migrate to tape.
Using SSA drives and their ability to have the "Higher availability"
configuration (two different ssa cards driving the loops, naturally
they were installed into different busses within the processor) so
having the DB & LOG mirrored (via adsm) across different loops which
were protected via dual ssa cards, across different busses... ADSM was
set to run under conditions that would actually prevent the processor
from running (wouldn't the processor die if it lost one of its
internal busses ? ? ?)
Now... we have 12 production ADSM servers (using 6 3494 ATL's) in 4
locations across 3 states. If by some freak of nature we were to have
an adsm server's processor crash (as to this date that has never
happened) we would simply register the client on one of the other adsm
servers and be good to go, if it is a critical situation and the
backups MUST run right then (such as the archives of our SAP
environments)
Now you ask... what if a processor dies and you require a
retrieve/restore? ? ?
If it were that critical (actually, IBM could probably have the
processor fixed prior to this next action being completed) I figure
the adsm data base could be loaded on a/the other adsm server which
shares the ATL and brought up as a second ADSM instance on "that"
server which would then give access to the data on 3590 tape.
Summary : having an ADSM backup environment available is critical...
but my view is if you're going to dedicate two machines to it you
might as well use both all the time, allowing one to "cover" in the
event of a failure of the other.
just my 2 cents worth
Dwight
