This is normal, I would think. Lots of files still takes longer than a few
big ones.
The better approach to speed this restore is to have more volumes on your
NT system. Instead of one large monolithic drive, have several. You can
still RAID5 underneath, but then use NT to partition this giant raid set
into smaller pieces. Then when you need to perform a restore, you can
start multiple restore streams
restore d:\* -subdir=yes
restore e:\* -subdir=yes
etc.
Bigger is not always better!
