I use buta, the butc replacement, to backup my AFS cell. At the moment
we run server 3.1.2.20 and buta buta.afs34a.patch.51149. With this
software levels backups run very well. With earlier/other levels I had
big problems:

        - it was not possible to make dumps to a disk storage pool. They
had to go directly to tape. As a consequence dumps were made
in sequence and not in parallel. Full dumps took a very long time.
        - buta aborted very frequently. Automated operation was nearly
          impossible.

Up to day I had to restore only single volumes which worked very fast.

I do not recommend to use the AFS/DFS client which backs up files and
directories with their acls. I used this client until last year. When
I lost 1GB disk I needed 3 days to restore it and we had about 1000
tape mounts per day during the restore time.
