Which version of the client do you have here Robert?
What I think you are seeing is a typical message when a file exists within a
directory which has exceeded Windows NT security limits. i.e. the filename
is greater than 255chars. You can check this by going to the subdir in
question
E: \users\bees3\My
Documents\Tons\Gen\1998_unit1_generator_build_october\cache
then right clicking, selecting permissions and attempt to reapply the
permissions on this directory. NT should give you an error at this point
saying that it can't apply valid security permissions to a certain file(s).
These are your offending files... either rename / delete.
The 3.1.0.6 client is supposed to have a 'fix' for this whereby it will skip
files with invalid permissions rather than just abort the entire drive.

Subject: ANS1256E Cannot make file/directory
Hi,
I'm having a major problem when backing up my Users data. ADSM gets
to
the same point and stops the whole backups. Therefore at the moment
it
backs up all the users up to the point of stopping and NO others. I
am
in desperate need of help.
Has anyone had this problem before ??? The messages I receive are
shown
below, I am convinced it is a corrupt file but why does ADSM not
skip
over it ???
note: names/directories have been changed to protect the innocent !!
