But will this help with the files that have already been marked for
expiration... It's my understanding that once they're marked for expiration
the will be expired when expiration processing runs...

For tonight and the following days, you can change the parameters in the
backup copy group, adding some days and nb. of version to keep (nb. of days
if client exist, extra backup, only ver etc...). Later on, you can reset
these parameters to their original value of yesterday.
