Its not as basic of a question as you might think:

We are running an RS/6000 AIX 4.2, ADSM 3.1 with a Magstar 3570, and
maintain backups for approx 45GB. Our situation, calls for just a backup of
the RS/6000 at this time. We determined that we would use the MKSYSB tape to
recover our RootVg and then ADSM to recover the rest of the filespaces.

Because we have backup storage space to spare, it was decided to have ADSM
backup all filespaces (including the RootVg) on the RS/6000. Some would say
there is a duplication of effort by overlaping backups of the RootVg, but it
is much easier and quicker to restore selective files from ADSM backups than
from the MKSYSB.

Hope that helped!
