I've now managed to solve the problem myself. The machine I'm on is set to use
British locale, (en_GB), and this seems to have a date format different from
what I
would normally expect.
I put a dateformat=1 in before the pitdate command , used the US date
convention,
and all was well.
Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time, but it's a nice gotcha in case anyone else
falls
for it.
