Just a guess, but maybe your adsm server is already running and you
     are trying to start it again.

Subject: ADSM Server doesn't start

Hi,
I have a serious problem.
On AIX 4.2.1 the ADSM Server 3.1.2.13 doesn't successfully. I see the
follwing messages:

ANR7806W Unable to open file /adsm/cache/backuppool1.dsm.
Explanation (open error): Cannot open or remove a file containing a
running program.
ANR1311E Vary-on failed for disk volume /adsm/cache/backuppool1.dsm -
unable to
access disk device.

This message occured for all disk storage pools. A reboot of the server
solved the problem.
My question: what do these error messages mean?
