There is no such thing as a good 8mm tape solution for computer use.
Helical scan tape was never intended for digital data. Save yourself
some money and purchase tape equipment intended for digital data. It
costs more but since it works and the 8mm does not then you save
money. Simple arithmetic. Use helical scan tape for analog video
signals where data loss only affects visual fidelity. Use linear tape
(DLT, 3590, etc) for digital data.
Nothing wrong with the RS/6000 hardware and the ADSM server runs
better on AIX than on NT . . . if this listserver is any indication of
problem frequency. erl

We are currently run our ADSM server on a 580 RS/6000 (128M RAM)
with two Exabyte 10e tape units.
Our equipment has been failing (one of the 10e's is down right now).
My question:
Can anyone recommend a good ADSM NT server setup? How much
RAM and processor(s) will be required (to perform as well or better
than the RS/6000)?
What is a good 8mm tape solution? We have looked @ the IBM 3449
device. We definitely want to have dual tapes in the next library we
get (doing tape moves right now is killing us).
Thanks for any ideas.
