A request to IBM:

A principal reference manual for the 3494 and 3590 devices has been
"IBM SCSI Tape Drive, Medium Changer, and Library Device Drivers:
 Installation and User's Guide" (GC35-0154)
and this has been available online in PostScript form at
 ftp://ftp.storsys.ibm.com/devdrvr/IBM_scsi_tape_IUG.ps

However, as of the current, fourth edition of this manual, all the programming
information has been split out into a separate manual, which page xii refers
to by name but no publication number :-(
"IBM SCSI Tape Drive, Medium Changer, and Library Device Drivers:
 Programming Reference"
And there is no sign of this spin-off manual online, which many of us need...
even if you don't program. (For example, the p.202 description of the MTEVENT
command says only that it is a command-line interface to the MTIOCLEW
operation - which is now described only in the Programming Reference - so if
you don't have that you have no information as to what the MTEVENT command
does, as the current User's Guide goes no further to describe it.)

So, two requests to IBM:
1. Please update the Installation and User's Guide (GC35-0154)
to specify the publication number of the new Programming Reference manual.
2. Put the new Programming Reference manual online, alongside the Installation
and User's Guide manual in the /devdrvr directory.

In the mean time, customers should hang on to their third edition, until the
mysterious new Programming Reference manual becomes available somewhere.
(The third edition is still available online as IBM_scsi_tape_IUG.ps.old.)

thanks, Richard Sims, Boston University OIT
