This is cumbersome but it works:

1. define a temporary mgmt class with 0 retention for deleted files,
2. exclude the files from backup
3. include the files using the temp mgmt class
4. backup the files to bind them to the temp class
5. delete the files
6. run another bacukup, the files should all expire from storage.
7. once the files have been removed, you can delete the temporary mgmt
class.
