Hi phil ,
       back with the optical issues. I must say that I did notice the
performance with optical volumes/ libraries is far below the ones that you
get the tapes. This is immaterial of whether you are using SCSI 1 or II .
Some of the performance measurements are listed in REDBOOK AIX storage
management GG24-4484-00  ( page 43/44)
