Hi Diana,

Prior to ADSM Version 3, the ADSM client had to query the ADSM
server for a list of backup versions to restore, then sort the
list to determine the order in which to restore the files. This
was often very time consuming and client resource intensive.
One common problem was "out of memory" errors, especially on
NetWare. Another issue was the amount of time it took between
when the restore command was issued and when the data actually
started to come down from the server.

A new restore protocol, dubbed "No Query Restore", was developed
for ADSM Version 3. This new protocol moves the responsibility
for determining which versions to restore and the order in which
to restore them from the client to the server. The result is that
the amount of time between when the restore command is issued and
when the files start to come down from the server, has been
reduced from hours (in the case of a very large restore) to
seconds.

Currently No Query Restore is used when you are restoring entire
directories (or volumes) from active backup versions (except that
point-in-time restore can also use No Query Restore). No Query
Restore will not be used if you specify -PICK, -INACTIVE, -LATEST,
-FROMDATE, -FROMTIME, -TODATE, or -TOTIME; in this case, the older
restore protocol, dubbed "Classic Restore", will be used.
restore protocol, dubbed "Classic Restore", will be used.

In addition, both client and server have to be at Version 3 in
order to use No Query Restore.

You can not explicitly tell ADSM which restore protocol to use;
it will automatically choose the restore protocol as described
above.

The ADSM Version 3 Technical Guide, SG24-2236, also talks about
this subject. You can view it online at
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com.

Andy

I have looked through my On-Line help and do not see any information on "no
query restore". Where do I find this information. I have a V3 server and
clients.

Look into the ADSMv3 "No Query Restore" function to see if it will
meet your needs.
