stk 9714 slow response

I have a new install STK 9714 tape library (dlt 7000) attached to an F50
w/os  AIX 4.3.1. I installed  the Atape driver v. 4.2.1.0 to talk to
adsm ver 3.1.2.0 but the tape library doesnt seem to respond to all
commands to it, and some responses are very slow. Any ideas?? Maybe a
different driver or???
