Dear Simon and ADSM experts,

Our onsite and offsite backup scheme was developed a few months ago, being
new to adsm and without knowing about this list or DRM.

I believe it is watertight. We will soon go thru a formal external
validation process. I would like you experts to shoot holes in our scheme
if possible. Of course if others wish to adapt this strategy, that is
their responsibility. I believe the scheme is only recommended for small
enterprises and not for large operations. (Use DRM)

Requirements:

1. Have daily backup and daily copy of the backup

2. Have weekly offsite storage of the backup

3. Have one set at offsite at all times.

Environment:

7 servers, 60 GB disk space, 2 DLT drives, weekly updated data less than
5 GB

Operating strategy:

1. Use primary stgpool of disk and tape

2. Use two sets of copy backup tapes (say X and Y)

3. Run nightly schedule to disk-backup pool

4. Daily migration from disk to tapebackuppool

5. After first backup, backup stgpool from disk and tape to copy volume
X0001 and Y0001. Move these tapes to offsite.

6. Every other day backup from disk and tape to storage pool X, say
   tape X0002

7. The next day backup stgpool from disk and tape to storage pool Y,
   such as Y0002

8. Every other week bring in tape X0001 from offsite, make access
read-write and run "move data X0002". At completion of process, declare
access to X0001 as offsite, and move tape X0001 back to offsite. [X0002
   will now be empty]

9. The next week bring in Y0001 from offsite, and use as under 7.

Thats all.

So we have:

Daily backups to two media (primary and copy stgpool)
Three backup sets, in sync except for last two days.
Two offsite backup sets
One complete backup set off-site at all times
Only 6 tapes in circulation
No reclaimation needed (Since April our first tapes filled up, so now
we are using 3 more tapes)

Any comments ?

Regards,

David
