I saw a lot of different "answers" to this one, most more complicated than it
has to. So, I thought I'd just varify what Bob says.

When you remove the tape from the drive manually and put it back into a slot
(the correct one or not), acsls simply sees that the tape's not where it's
expected to be: in the drive. Therefore, it deletes it from its inventory. When
you remove the tape from the drive, TAKE IT OUT OF THE LIBRARY. Close the door
and wait for the initialization to complete, then place the tape back into the
cap (i/o station). This will cause acsls to put it back in its inventory
database. As far as ADSM is concerned, the tape never left the library, so you
don't need any checkin/out commands.

When we have had stuck tape problems we eject the tape and put it in the
I/O station. When you close the door and the robot finishes scanning the
contents, it will go get the tape and put it into the library. No problem after
that.

I have had the same problem with my 3570/3575 tapes. Advice from IBM is
always NEVER remove the tape manually, but they offered no suggestions
on how to avoid it.
The only way I have been able to get around it is to play with the tape
library itself. Turning it off and back on, then running the 'init
element status' usually gets it to eject the tape, and sometimes put it
away. If it doesn't put the ejected tape away I haven't had much
success without halting and restarting ADSM. For some reason that seems
to work, and it is much faster than an audit library.
It is always a hit or miss situation, so I hope someone out there has a
better answer to your question!
