As you have found out, the REGREST command does not support going to inactive
versions of the registry. Here is what I did to get around this......
First, as you probably know, the REGBACK command copies the current user's
registry information to a directory structure named ADSM.SYS. A typical
structure (or should I say my structure - I have been told I am far from
typical :-)> ) looks like this:
ADSM.SYS
|_ Registry
|_Lawsonj (my NT machine name)
|_Machine (4 files here)
|_ User
|_ADMINISTRATOR (self explanitory)
|_Lawsonj (My id to NT)
|_SYSTEM (base stuff - I think)
When you do a REGBACK, the files that are backed up are the two files that
are found in the user directory for the logged in user - in other words -
if you log in as administrator, and do a regback - the files are in the
Administrator directory in the tree above. Therefore to get back an
older version of the registry, what you need to do is to first do a
manual restore of the appropriate pair of files for the user from the
date you desire. Then you must do a manual backup of the same two files,
so that they now appear as the active versions of the files. When this
is complete, you can then do a REGREST and restore the Registry.
Remember that you must be logged in to NT as the user whose registry you
are trying to restore. And I have always found it expediant to power the
machine off (not go through shut down) after the restore is complete -
this eliminates the possibility of overlaying the registry that you just
restored.
Hope this helps.

How do I restore a registry on an NT client (ver. 3) to a specific point
in time? This comes up when we want to restore a server to the state it
was in prior to the latest backup. I thought I was able to do it by
restoring the adsm.sys directory before doing the REGREST command, but
now I am not sure.
