Jim,

This sounds a lot like a problem we are currently on
working with Microsoft. On occasion, the backup
via the Exchange API will hang because of a bug
in the Exchange Server not releasing a "Read" mutex.
(Official Microsoft bug# is 66198.)
A deadlock situation arises. They have agreed there is
a bug but they do not have the fix yet.
We are waiting for some type of fix from them.

The subsequent runs of the the backup will fail because
the Exchange Server thinks there is another backup running
and will think that until the process ends.
We have considered coding around Microsoft's bug, but
prefer to wait until a HOTFIX is available (hopefully soon.)

Until we get a fix from Microsoft, the only way that we
have gotten around this was to redirect the output of
the excdsmc.exe command to a file.

Let me know if I can help further.
