Hi Claus,
I'm not certain whether is used Java or not, but a web-based
administrative client exists today with ADSM 3.1. All that you need to
do is add a line to your dsmserv.opt file that says COMMMETHOD HTML,
then point your browser at your adsm server node using port 1580 (by
default).

Subject: Java version of the administration client
Hi ADSM'ers
Following the discussions about availability of the
different modules
of ADSM (Backup client, administrative client, Server) on
different
platforms, it seems as if the ADSM development team is
trying to save
effort in their development of the adminstrative client.
What makes me wonder is why they are focusing on an Windows
only
administrative client, when JAVA is available (becoming
more and more
mature) with a very viable GUI component library in SWING.
It makes a lot of sense to me to develop a administrative
client with
JAVA for all of us that are not using Windows. It might be
possible to
dump the windows only version of the administrative client
all
together (using TCP/IP as the protocol for the
administration
interface). Possible the web-client interface would be much
simpler to
maintain also.
One benefit for the enduser will be to avoid having to have
an
administration workstation next to the server because the
server
operating system is not able to run the administrative
client.
It is possible to do this, on example is the new TCP/IP
stack for
OS/2. All cofiguration of the TCP/IP stack, DNS, DHCP
server is done
using JAVA GUIs. Very nicely done and very efficient, it
allows
administration of these things to be carried out using
Windows clients
as well as OS/2 clients. The web interface is built on the
same
classes, only thing to do is to install a Web-server (SUN
have a JAVA
version) and and wupti on the same classes you have a
wbe-interface to
the administration of DNS and DHCP. Very cool and - I guess
very
efficient from a developers point of view.
I think it would be nice if the same thing was possible
with the
administrative client to ADSM. I hope that if others feel
the same way
I do, that they will come forward with supportf ro this
idea, to
convince ADSM development that enough would like this thing
to start
development. After all it can't be that remote to them
looking at
IBM's support for JAVA in general.
Kind regards
